"Good artworks catch your heart and then make you think. You ask a lot of questions. A good artwork gives you alternative ways to observe the world you live in."

The assignment proved challenging for students that chose more serious songs with explicit lyrics. Editing their videos was truly a learning experience, as students gained awareness and understanding of the power of media and the difference between meaningful social commentary and gratuitous tabloid journalism. In a few cases graphic images were replaced and profanity bleeped out. More often than not, compromise was reached by adjusting the amount of time an image appears in the video. In the end, I do believe the original “vision” and “voice” of these student videos was preserved.

"Media literacy empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers
of an increasingly wide range of messages using image, language, and sound. It is
the skillful application of literacy skills to media and technology messages. As
communication technologies transform society, they impact our understanding
of ourselves, our communities, and our diverse cultures, making media literacy
an essential life skill for the 21st century."

( The Alliance for A Media Literate America, 2000 )
